7 - Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

1) Difficulties with growing indoor plants in small living arrangements

2) Who: Residents in smaller living arrangements with an interest in plants
What: Lack of constant sunlight and space required to grow plants
Why: Growing indoor plants in these conditions are often ineffective or impossible

3) Apart from individuals who are already interested in indoor plants, either for use (herbs, fruits, vegetables) or aesthetic, if provided with easy, attractive options for growing them, customers outside of the target market may be interested.
It's easier to target a certain area. Windows provide the easiest way to have plants reach sunlight. Therefore, the product can revolve around this portion to create something that can attach easily and self-sustain for the most part.
We are moving towards smaller housing; for many people, they lived with nature all around them and letting go of having backyards and gardens is not only difficult but often unpleasant. If provided with the option to cultivate their own plants, they can bridge this interest.

4) Through the interviews, it appears that it may be best to target a more specific niche of the indoor plant market. This can be one of the following mentioned in the interviews; flowers, herbs, bonsai, or small vegetable plants. Common decorative plants often do not have trouble thriving in low light indoor conditions so it is better to target the more fickle plants or those with a bit more purpose. Additionally, debris from the planting is an issue to be addressed. Not only the dirt from the planters but also the dripping water after irrigation and the leaves or flowers that dry over time. Windowsills are a good location but the product cannot be too bulky; some sills are very thin and there is often furniture near these that prevent anything too large. Having information as to what plants can feasibly grow indoors is also helpful; determining averages of indoor temps as well as humidity and sunlight levels could help better target the market.

  1. Hello Ana,

Your hypothesis is very organized and straight to the point. I remember reading this opportunity on a bug list before. As a plant owner, I have been having trouble finding windowsills that could hold my plant pots. I tried to grow a plant inside my house, but it was not getting enough sunlight, therefore the plant did not survive. I am looking forward to your solution to this problem!
